Replacing José Gervasio Artigas

José Gervasio Artigas liberated Uruguay from the grip of its colonial oppressors. In October 2009 an anonymous agent liberated a bust of Artigas from the Ibero-American sculpture park in Sydney, Australia. In respect for Artigas’ achievements we replaced the bust with a dutiful clay substitute.

Just one theft in a long line of disappearing colonial heroes the removal of Artigas’ proud visage suggests that thievery gives us the opportunity to re-assess the value of what we once had. And so, against the stubborn larceny of this anonymous agent we must insist on the value of the Ibero-American sculpture park and its long row of body-less heroes.
