Bababa International first formed in 1928 as a rival to the International Style in Architecture. Coming together around a shared vision of a world without right angles, they pursued this fantastic agenda with a dogged and fatalistic aplomb. Their chief output was confined to showing up in protest wherever and whenever a Gropius, Aalto, van der Rohe or Corbusier was raised, usually transported by a large, elaborately patterned Zeppelin with a zig-zag throttle and peanut shaped under carriage.
Unfortunately history is cruel and proudly withholds its charm from the foolish and irrelevant. Modernism flourished and Bababa International fell into a deep well of obscurity, never to be seen again. That is until today.
Beginning in July of 2008 the name Bababa International has mysteriously resurfaced. Attached to various art exhibitions, commercial ventures and political campaigns, their activity is fantastic and irrational, following no discernible pattern, moving towards no visible goal.
No one can be sure if the people behind this recent spate of activity are the original Bababa International, who were presumed to be either dead or beaten and weathered with age, or some new, more youthful derivation who have quixotically attempted to pick up the original’s fallen banner. The one thing we can be sure of is that whoever animates this most recent iteration of Bababa International must surely still hold that old and splendid dream of a world with out right angles close to their foolish hearts.
